OAC Student Night & Job Fair 2024
On the evening of March 8, the Sheraton Parkway Toronto North Hotel & Suites in Richmond Hill, Ontario, buzzed with energy and excitement as it hosted the highly anticipated Student Night & Job Fair. Organized by the Opticians Association of Canada (OAC), this event marked a significant occasion, drawing an impressive turnout of approximately 230 students from Seneca College, Georgian College, and NAIT—the highest attendance recorded to date.
The event was designed as a prime opportunity for students enrolled in optical programs to connect with potential employers, engage in meaningful dialogue, and explore a myriad of employment opportunities within the optical industry. The setting was informal yet vibrant, with students and faculty members mingling with representatives from various optical companies over appetizers and beverages, creating an ideal environment for networking.
One of the highlights of the evening was the complementary bus transportation provided for attendees, ensuring convenient access to and from the venue. This thoughtful arrangement was made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship by The Optical Group, which underscored their commitment to supporting the next generation of opticians.
The job fair featured an impressive roster of participating companies, each eager to meet with budding opticians and discuss future prospects. Each sponsor played a crucial role in the success of the event, providing students with a broad spectrum of insights and opportunities in the field of optometry and optical services.
Adding an element of excitement to the proceedings was a draw to win the NACOR Exam Fees, an invaluable gift considering the significant costs associated with these mandatory exams for becoming a certified optician. The evening also featured an inter-school challenge, stirring up a friendly competition among the attendees from Georgian and Seneca Colleges. The challenge was to achieve the highest percentage of participation based on the size of each college’s opticianry program. Georgian College emerged victorious, a triumph celebrated with cheers and applause when announced.
